How the Technology Student Association Enhances Leadership, Technical, and Social Development

The Technology Student Association was formed to foster academic excellence, technical and scientific skills, along with business savvy skills, in the workplace. They are also known as the “TSA” or Technological Association of America. This is an international organization with members from all around the world. It was founded in 1986 and has grown greatly to over 29 million strong. The mission of the organization is to unite students in technical, scientific, and college-level pursuits.

 

Tsa works with colleges and universities to promote personal growth, technological advancements, as well as provide research opportunities. It also sponsors workshops, seminars, and conferences. Their mission is to enhance the personal growth of those in technology, scientific, or college-going backgrounds through leadership and technical assistance. By participating in conferences, workshops, and by serving on their boards, students can show others what they are capable of and gain insight into what they do. By participating in leadership positions within the society, students will be able to influence decision makers as well as set an example for others.

 

The Technology Student Association works to sponsor high school graduation events, such as state championships and regional meets. They work with local high schools and develop a plan to bring high school graduates together with college and technology students to foster a strong community spirit. They also hold events such as Relay the Facts Day, a day where high school students can demonstrate their knowledge of a specific topic and present their personal growth to the crowd. They work with other student organizations and participate in activities to enhance social engagement and bring people together. In doing so, they hope to foster leadership and high school students’ personal growth.

 

TSA also sponsors a variety of different competitions throughout the year. One of these competitions is the vex robotics competition. Each year, high school students are formed from across the country to form teams and compete in this robotics competition. Teams are then judged based on how well they operated, how well they solved problems, and how well they applied scientific principles in solving the problem. This is an exciting competition in which each team is given a certain amount of time to solve the problem before the next team takes over. It has gained a great deal of recognition, as well, due to its high-tech nature.

 

The TSA also sponsors science fairs, as it did when it chartered the first technology student association. The goal of the fair is to introduce students to the science behind the technology. They also present projects that demonstrate the potential of technologies, as well as new applications of technology. Many science fair projects are based on ideas and concepts brought forth by a TSA committee. Since then, science fair projects are usually sponsored by the technology student association.

 

Another way technology is used for the TSA is through leadership and mentoring competitions. Technology leadership competitions are typically called Service Year competitions, after the course work for the competition is centered around serving areas of need within communities or using technology to enhance service delivery within government agencies. Throughout the year, the winners of these leadership competitions are given leadership roles with a short timeframe to implement new strategies. Students work with teams of peers to complete their projects, usually while simultaneously participating in local service projects and courses.

 

Students also participate in science fairs, a student organization that requires students to apply scientific thinking in a structured setting. Projects are based on topics that students are expected to be familiar with, but some independent research may be required. This process introduces students to scientific reasoning and evaluation. High school technology education courses are taught through a course structure that includes lecture and discussion, hands-on experiments, and reflection.

 

The TSA further teaches students how to integrate these concepts through extracurricular activities, competitions, related programs, and volunteer work. The high school technology student association enhances personal development, leadership, technical expertise, problem solving abilities, and teamwork. It is an opportunity for students to use technology and creative thinking to solve problems that affect society in general. Such problems are faced every day, from the creation of new technologies to the maintenance of the World Wide Web and other communications networks. The technology student association, by providing resources for students to obtain knowledge on these and related topics, aids in the overall process of acquiring the skills and knowledge necessary to enable them to contribute to the improvement of society.
